I'll be frank, I liked the notion behind Fiverr.com.
Just a couple clicks and a customer can put an order with a freelancer based on a particular set of deliverables.
Easy peasy, right? Sure, but it comes at a cost. A large one.
This is one the few freelance platforms in which buyers have been given free reign to abuse, threaten and outright blackmail vendors any way they like.
In this informative article, I want to discuss a recent bad experience as a seller on Fiverr, and also I decided to give up on the stage entirely.
How A Regular Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
(I've been guiding her building a reputable account, and how to go above and beyond every last purchase. Everything stated is her doing, I am just an observer.)
In this case, she had only gotten another $5 order on her logo gig, which seemed to be just like another... or so we thought.
The order was fulfilled in great time, and my girlfriend had included a bonus emblem concept as well as the source file (that is usually part of the pricier bundle ).
The customer"loved" among the concepts so we proceeded to send her the appropriates file sizes, as stated in the gig description.
The client came back requesting a social networking kit to go with the logo, something which is obviously not offered as part of her or his gig.
Against my advice, my buddy chose to deliver the extra work, despite not getting paid any extra for this.
Following that, the customer responded with much more requirements and a few changes to the social networking files.
At this time, she consented enough was enough.
Despite every attempt to please this person, they have been clearly overstepping their bounds here.
That is when the client went from only overstepping bounds to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of taking my girlfriend Fiverr reputation hostage.)
While she took some time to ponder a reply and reach out to Fiverr support for assistance, the customer did finally go on and render a 1 star review.
Presumably this was to show her he/she wasn't Fiverr - Freelance Services Marketplace for The Lean Entrepreneur kidding.
Shortly after, while still waiting on Fiverr's answer to the support query, the customer paid an extra $10 to your social media kit.
Obviously, the payment was accompanied by yet another danger.
Now, all I wished to do was go all Liam Neeson and hunt this individual down so that I could punch them from the face.
But, at the moment, I still had hope that Fiverr service would step in and save my girlfriend from that PITA client.
After the answer came back from Fiverr support, they told her they couldn't Fiverr review - Bonsai induce the buyer to accept the purchase.
Alright, that's reasonable enough. (Even though the buyer already accepted it.)
In addition they proposed drawing up a list for the purchaser to reveal the work was done in accordance with the gig requirements.
My girlfriend hauled in her initial email the client was trying to extort her for free work out the agreed conditions, by leaving a negative inspection if she did not comply.
Of course, it wasn't about the work, it was all about seeking protection from an abusive client who had been intentionally pushing their luck.
Their answer didn't offer either of us some confidence that Fiverr really knew that, and even in this stage we felt as though they did not need to get involved.
At the exact same time, she also responded to the buyers latest threat, explaining that she would not continue to work together unless the comments has been changed/removed.
(Again, this will be comments that was clearly and intentionally left to bully her into providing function out the agreed provisions .)
A fair request by anyones standards, right?
As opposed to acknowledge what the purchaser had done up until this time, Fiverr instantly turned the tables on my girlfriend.
Turns out, she was the one breaking all the rules.
Since she'd requested the customer to modify their feedback, she was no longer eligible for any assistance from Fiverr support.
It's possible to imagine how we both felt studying this.
What the buyer had done and said before her last message was now being swept under the carpet -- like never happened at all.
Fiverr basically opted to encourage a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend using a permanent stain in an account she'd worked so hard to build up.
And think, there are plenty of buyers doing exactly that on Fiverr, knowing they could and will eliminate it.
But as most of this was occurring, I did some research to see whether look at this now any other sellers went through a similar ordeal with an individual purchaser.
Very quickly, I found a range of almost equal cases over the Fiverr forum obsolete years back. (that's correct, decades.)
This is obviously something that's been happening for a long time and it stems from giving buyers too much power over vendors.
If there's 1 thing I've learned about Fiverr, it's that clients are ALWAYS more valued than freelancers.
Doesn't matter how much time that you put into a job, or how hard you've worked on it, or perhaps how long you managed communication during a dispute, even when it actually boils down to it... freelancers have little to no security.
Even if it is a clear cut situation in your favor, there is still every chance the client will come out on top. It takes it one tiny thing you"did wrong" according to their own conditions of support and EVERYTHING else is ignored
Looking at the signs, it's clear to me which Fiverr is well aware of what's going on, yet is still willing to settle back and let it happen.
If you are a decision maker at Fiverr and you're reading this, I implore you to seriously reevaluate your current support procedures for freelancers.
It's not right that somebody can set all that time and effort in building up an account and also over-delivering at every conceivable chance, just to be taken down by the very people you rely on to safeguard you.
Look, I do not want to abandon Fiverr. I don't need to be telling folks to avoid your system.
But after everything that's happened, you haven't left me any choice.
Until something is done in order to shield freelancers from using this type of abuse, I'll continue to propagate this post and do whatever I can to stop others from falling victim to a one-sided support team.
The second you actually do something about this and also provide freelancers a means to fight , I'll be happy to update this post.
